MCPA CURRICULUM GUIDE

PERSONALIZED INSTRUCTIONAL EXPECTATION

The Bahamian curriculum is structured with a national framework emphasizing core subjects in primary school and leading to nationally certified exams for secondary students. Primary school (Grades 1-6) focuses on foundational skills in Literacy, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, with additional subjects like Religious Education, Physical Education, and sometimes a Foreign Language. High school (Grades 7-12) is divided into junior secondary (Grades 7-9), culminating in the Bahamas Junior Certificate (BJC) exams, and senior secondary (Grades 10-12), which prepares students for the Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) exams.

Primary School (Grades 1-6)

  • Core Subjects: Literacy (reading, writing), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Religious Education.

  • Specialist Subjects: Students also typically receive instruction in areas like Information Technology, Physical Education, and often a Foreign Language (e.g., Spanish).

  • Assessment: Students take the Grade Level Assessment Test (GLAT) after completing Grade 6.

High School (Grades 7-12)

  • Junior Secondary (Grades 7-9):

    • Curriculum: Focuses on subjects such as English Language, General Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Health Science.

    • Assessment: Students take the BJC examinations at the end of this stage.

  • Senior Secondary (Grades 10-12):

    • Curriculum: Students take a broader range of subjects to prepare for the BGCSE exams.

    • BGCSE Subjects: Include options like Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English Language, Mathematics, Bookkeeping/Accounts, Commerce, Economics, and various technical or vocational courses (e.g., Auto Technology, Electrical Installation, Family and Consumer Science).

Assessment: The primary national examination at this level is the BGCSE.
